Walter Scott was employed as the personal valet of Lt. Col. Robert Napier, a British army officer who had been assigned to survey the tribal villages of northeast India. Scott joined Napier’s mission, and on February 7th, 1850, he became the first European to reach the hills of Meghalaya. The trip was the first of many of Scott’s adventures, and he ultimately wrote an account of his exploration in a book, “The Life and Adventures of Walter Scott”, which was published in 1851. In 1868, Scott returned to Cherrapunji and erected a memorial in his honor on the same hill from which he had first glimpsed the valley. The monument has since been restored and is now a popular tourist attraction.
