Overview:
Sat Kothari Caves are located in the Pune district of Maharashtra, India. These ancient caves were carved out of the rocky sandstone of the Deccan Plateau over a two thousand year period. It is believed that the Sat Kothari Caves were originally used by Buddhism, Jainism and Hinduism as a place of retreat and meditation. History:
Sat Kothari Caves consists of four caves called Rupak, Purshotta, Vijaylaxmi and Jyhangi. The Rupak cave stands out as the most prominent of them all. It has a 12 foot tall statue of Lord Buddha which is its centrepiece. The other three also have several statues of Hindu gods and goddesses. These caves have been carved out in the form of a mandala and the cave walls display sculptures of various Hindu gods, motifs of sea shells, floral and geometric patterns.
