Malleswar Temple In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
Malleswar Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in Karnataka, India. It is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is one of the most popular tourist attractions in the state. This temple is said to have been built in the 9th century CE by two of the greatest Mahalinga kings in Karnataka, namely the Kadamba dynasty and the Chola dynasty. The main deity in this temple is Mallikarjuna Swamy, also known as Malleswar. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Malleswar Temple is quite large and is built in typical South Indian style of architecture. Its central attraction is its tall gopuram or entrance tower which stands at a height of 40 feet and is believed to have been constructed some 800 years ago. Inside the temple complex, there is a big Shivalinga which is said to be more than 600 years old. There are also several shrines dedicated to Lord Ganesh, Lord Hanuman, and Goddess Parvati. The Malleswar Temple is also known as Sri Mallikarjuna Swamy Temple. It is believed that Lord Shiva himself appeared in front of the two Mahalinga kings and asked them to build the temple for people to worship Him.
