The temple was built by the then ruler Shri Madhavaraya, under the guidance of Shri Vadiraja Swamiji, head of the Shri Krishna Matha. It is one of the five jyotirlinga temples in Karnataka, the other four being Kollur, Murdeshwar, Gokarna, and Sirsi. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
