Overview:
ingesvara Temple is a Hindu temple dedicated to Lord Shiva located in Talapady, Udupi district of Karnataka, India. This temple is also called Pancha Mutt. The temple was built by the then ruler Shri Madhavaraya, under the guidance of Shri Vadiraja Swamiji, head of the Shri Krishna Matha. It is one of the five jyotirlinga temples in Karnataka, the other four being Kollur, Murdeshwar, Gokarna, and Sirsi. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
Panchlingesvara Temple is a self-standing five-storey structure with each storey built to honor a certain deity. At the four cardinal points, the towers of the temple symbolize the four Vedas and the storey at the middle is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is worshipped as Panchalingeswara. Panchlingesvara Temple is unique in that it has four entrances each facing south, north, east, and west, and each entrance has its own shikara tower symbolizing the four Vedas.
