Overview:
Shaniwar Wada is an ancient fortification located in Pune, India. It was initially built by the Peshwas of the Maratha Empire in 1730 and served as their residence till 1818. The architecture of the structure is a combination of Hemadpanti and Peshawi styles of Indian architecture. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Shaniwar Wada is set on the right bank of the Mutha River in Pune and is fortified by high walls. Within the fortification lies a series of courtyards, gates, gardens, and large public buildings. The structure is made up of stone and brick, with a marble and gold-plated idol of the Hindu deity Shiva inside. The exterior of the structure is illuminated at night and the upper walls have a moat that allows for quick access to the fortification in times of danger. Interesting facts:
• The Shaniwar Wada was originally constructed over six acres of land and was surrounded by a diameter of seven hundred meters. • It was the site of the first signing of a defence treaty between the UK and the East India Company. This treaty was signed by Sir John Malcolm in 1817. • The fortification has survived a series of bombings throughout the years, but still stands instantly recognizable today. • The structure was featured in a scene in the Bollywood movie Singham, in which the hero Ajay Devgn fights the villain.Visit one of the famous monuments of India with your friends and family.
