Asokan Column Overview Asokan Column is an ornamental pillar of red sandstone and granite that was created by the rulers of the Maurya Dynasty in India in 3rd century BC. The Asokan Pillar still stands tall in its original location, in present-day Delhi, India. Prominent Features The most prominent feature of the Asokan Pillar is its highly ornate capital which is made of a large lion figure, flanked by four smaller lions, which is said to represent the majesty and power of Emperor Asoka. Below the lion figure is an elephant and a bull, symbols of the four main castes of India. Other features of the Asokan Pillar include geometric designs and figures of animals, humans and plants, as well as inscriptions of in-depth messages from Emperor Asoka. History The Asokan Pillar was created by Emperor Asoka, the great ruler of the Maurya Dynasty, during the third century BC. Emperor Asoka was a Buddhist ruler of India who tried to spread the teachings of Buddhism throughout the region. He was known for his policy of Dharma, which focused on nonviolence and justice, as well as spreading the teachings of love and compassion.
