Overview:

History:
Megalithic cists typically consist of an upright stone-built chamber or cist, surrounded by one or more kerbstones or rough stone edges, with an entrance or access, generally of low profile. These tombs were built for group burial, typically for family members and death was sometimes marked with elaborate stone carvings that are still visible today. The entrances, which often pointed north, allowed access to the chamber where the bodies had been placed in a contracted position and laid to rest beneath a capstone. The earliest cists were thought to have been built around 4,000 BC, although it is now believed that they may date back even further. The cairns, which are comprised of several stones stacked one on top of another, often marked the entrance to the cist. Originally, the use of cairns was thought to have been used as a way of warding off spirits from the tomb, however, some have since suggested that they may have marked processional roads for rituals.
