History:
The cists and cairns at Gudalur are constructed using large megalithic stones, arranged to create a circle which has a diameter of up to 10 m in places. The overall design of the cists and cairns follows a pattern similar to those seen in other ancient grave structures in the region. Inside them, a variety of potteries can be found along with burial urns. These burial urns contain carefully arranged funerary items and sometimes even mummified bodies. The stone circles around the cists and cairns are another interesting feature of the site. These are composed of smaller stones arranged in a circle around the grave structure, possibly symbolizing the cosmic aspect of life and death.
