Echchur in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, India is known for its megalithic cists and cairns with stone circles. This particular megalithic site is situated in the core area of Madurai District. It is located in an isolated place attached to three districts. Echchur is one of the oldest megalithic sites in Tamil Nadu and lies in the dry zone ofIndia. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The megalithic cists and cairns with stone circles in Echchur are made up of beautifully arranged cut-and-dressed stones that were laid around the megalithic monuments. The size of the cairns depends mainly on the number of stones laid. They were laid in a concentric pattern and in some cases, even a single menhir was also included in the cairn. All the stones were placed in a definite pattern encircling the cairn or the cist. The stones were carefully laid and they had precise configurations of rock walls that ran in concentric circles. The cairns in Echchur contain many interesting artifacts, such as pottery shards, iron objects, axes, and stone blades.
