Overview:
thic Cists and Cairns at Vaiyavur, formerly Puliyurkottai, is a prehistoric archaeological site located in Tamil Nadu, India. The site has been dated to between the 9th and 13th centuries AD and consists of several megaliths of varied shapes, sizes and construction types. Megalithic Cists and Cairns are collective burials within an enclosure of stones and other monumental structures. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The cists and cairns of Vaiyavur form a unique combination of megalithic and non-megalithic structures, with a few also displaying possible signs of Hindu-Buddhist influence. The dominant feature of the site is the megalithic cists, made up of either cyclopean blocks of granite or smaller stones. There are several cairs of various shapes and sizes such as rectangles, circles, oblongs and squares. Some of the cists are surrounded by small stone circles and some are just irregular stones lined up in rows. You must visit one of these historical places in India on your India tour

Megalithic Cists and Cairns at Vaiyavur are believed to be the largest megalithic site in South India and the third largest in India. It is also one of the few megalithic sites in India that has been extensively studied and documented. It is believed to be the earliest megalithic site in the south of India.
