Overview:
Megalithic cists and cairns, Palliyagaram is a prehistoric, megalithic culture, located in the southernmost part of India, in Tamil Nadu State. This site is located on the banks of the Vellar River and has been declared a protected Monument by the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI). This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The site consists of cists and cairns that date back to the Iron Age (800 BC- 200AD). It is an impressive megalithic structure containing a variety of stones and boulders arranged in circles, some of which measure close to 3 metres in diameter. The construction of these large megalithic structures is a testament to the engineering skills of the ancient people of Palliyagaram. The megalithic cists and cairns of Palliyagaram have been studied and dated by the ASI to belong to the Iron Age, from 800BC to 200AD. The absence of pottery, stone tools or other artifacts indicates that this site was likely used as an early cemetery. The circular structures suggest that these cists and cairns were related to burial rituals of the Iron Age people.
