The Jaina Statue of Gomateswara is a 57-foot tall monolithic sculpture located in the sacred pilgrimage destination of Shravanabelagola, in Karnataka, India. It was carved out of a single boulder in the 10th century by a sculptor named Mallitamma, who was associated with the Western Ganga dynasty. This statue is a representation of the last Tirthankara (spiritual leader) of Jainism, Bhagwan Bahubali, also known as Gomateswara. The statue is one of the most important and visited pilgrimage sites in India, and is a popular tourist attraction in the state of Karnataka. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Jaina Statue of Gomateswara is a huge single boulder carvings that weigh about 80 tones and is 57 feet tall. It is said to have been built as a religious sculpture, but is also known for its architectural style, which exhibits the influences of the early Chalukyan style of architecture. The sculpture has various intricate carvings such as unfinished scenes of the ancient Jain mythologies, scenes of the life of Gomateswara and scenes of the activities of the ancient kings and rulers.
