Brief History:
Jama Masjid, Tinsukia is a beautiful mosque located in the city of Tinsukia in the northeastern state of Assam in India. The mosque was built in 1972 by the British for the Tinsukia Muslim Community (Jamiatul Muslemeen). It is one of the largest and oldest mosques in the state and is especially noteworthy for its classic colonial architecture and its colorful, intricate decorations. The mosque is a simple structure built with red bricks, with two storeys and a basement. The design is characterized by its distinctive arched doorways, wood paneled windows, and four towers or minarets. The main hall inside has a large central balcony and smaller side-balconies, and has an overall capacity of 6,000-7,000 people. On the second floor there is a mezzanine section with a smaller but still large capacity. The mosques eaves are decorated with Quranic inscriptions, while its walls are covered with intricate floral and vegetable designs. The prayer hall is illuminated with colorful lamps and chandeliers, while its exterior is painted in bright yellow and green colors. The grounds also contain a large garden filled with plants and flowers. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.
Architecture:
The Jama Masjid in Tinsukia, Assam is a Mughal-style mosque that features a central, single-aisle prayer hall with side wings on both sides. The central hall is semi-octagonal in shape and features six mihrabs, or prayer niches, that align along the qibla wall. It also has thirty-two ornate, wooden pillars with intricate floral and geometric designs and three stalactite-adorned arches that frame the entrance. The walls are decorated with intricate jaali (lattice) designs, while the roof of the mosque is made of red brick tiles. Outside, a grand staircase leads to the main terrace where devotees can offer their prayers. The entire complex is surrounded by a high wall with two domed gateways on two sides that open onto the main street. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
