Brief History:
- Jama Masjid, Rishikesh is one of the oldest and largest mosques in the North Indian state of Uttarakhand. The mosque was built in 1760 CE by Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan. The shrine was declared a Heritage Monument by the Archaeological Survey of India in 1950. The mosque stands 50 feet (15 m) high and is one of the revered religious places of the town. The mosque consists of a grand prayer hall inside, which is adorned with beautiful Calligraphic scriptures in Arabic language and Urdu. The mosque also has a dome situated at the very top. The façade of the mosque is covered with granites stones which are brought from River Kali Ganga. The entrance gate of the mosque is made out of wood and is beautifully decorated. The mosque also has a well known Madrasa inside. Inside the mosque, you can find the grave of Mughal Emperor, Mirza Haider and other famous saints of Rishikesh. The intricate Jama Masjid in Rishikesh is located on the banks of the Ganges near the Triveni Ghat. It features a traditional Indo-Islamic architectural style and is said to be built in 1870 under the reign of Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal State. The mosque has a large central dome and four minarets with tall towers that are covered in intricate designs. The façade of the building is decorated with white stones, and the walls feature floral and geometric Islamic designs. There are several small domes located on all four sides of the main dome, along with a large prayer hall. The interiors of the building are adorned with colorful tiles and Islamic calligraphy.
