Overview:
The Huge Stone Figures Of The Lion, Elephant , And A Bull , Mamallapuram are in fact a part of the shore temple of Mamallapuram, located in Tamil Nadu. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site and is one of the finest examples of an early Indian shore-based architecture. These sculptures are said to have been erected by the Pallava king Narsimhavarman I (popularly known as Mamalla) who ruled between AD 630 and AD 668. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
These sculptures stand out for their huge size and perfect craftsmanship. The lion figure measures 25 feet in height and is situated near the entrance to the temple. The elephant and bull figures are located behind the lion and are 22 feet and 20 feet in height respectively. The figures are carved out of a large single piece of granite and have exquisite details. One of the historical monuments of India,it tells the story of a bygone era.
The exact origin of these sculptures is unknown, but historians believe that it was constructed by King Narasimhavarman I in the 7th century. The king was particularly known for his skill in architecture and many of his projects were inspired by his interest in art. He is also said to have carved two other pieces of art, the Varaha and Varahi sculptures, which are now displayed in the British Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
