Brief History:
Jama Masjid, Delhi is India’s largest mosque and the final architectural marvel of the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan, built between 1644 and 1656. Situated in Old Delhi across the Red Fort, Jama Masjid serves as a symbol of both the city of Delhi and of Mughal architecture. The majestic mosque has three gateways and is constructed out of red sandstone and white marble. The interior of the mosque is adorned with intricate marble and sandstone carvings and verses from the Quran. The mosque has a huge courtyard that is capable of accommodating 25,000 worshippers, which also includes a massive ablution pool in the center. The main prayer hall is entered through two large archways, and is home to a pulpit for the cleric and a large number of traditional prayer mats. It is one of the most famous mosque in India which you must visit.
Architecture:
The architecture of the Jama Masjid in Delhi is a combination of traditional Indian and Islamic styles. The main prayer hall of the mosque is made up of three domes, while the courtyard features four minarets that are surmounted by seven gold-plated kiosks. The walls of the prayer hall are decorated with red sandstone, while the marble floor is inscribed with Koranic verses. Two white marble balconies along the eastern side of the mosque provide a view of the Red Fort and the city of Delhi. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
