Overview:
Hatvara Temple is an ancient Hindu temple located in the village of Hatvara, in the Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, India. It is one of the most revered shrines of India and is visited by millions of devotees every year. The temple is dedicated to Lord Vishnu and is believed to have been in existence since the 5th century AD. The temple complex also consists of several small shrines dedicated to other Hindu deities, such as Shiva, Hanuman, and Ganesha. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The most prominent feature of Hatvara Temple is its two-storeyed beehive-like cone-shaped structure, called ‘Gopuram’. This is the main entrance of the temple and has carvings of various Hindu gods and goddesses, which are beautifully and intricately sculpted. The temple also has a large courtyard that houses several gorgeous multi-colored paintings of Hindu gods, goddesses, saints and sages. • Hatvara Temple is home to a rare jalabhārati, or water vessel, said to have been gifted to Lord Vishnu by the five Pandava princes during their battle with the Kauravas. • The temple complex also houses many old manuscripts and ancient artefacts that were gifted to it by the numerous kings who visited the shrine in the past. • The temple was destroyed by Mughal forces during their invasion of Mathura in the 16th century.
