Overview:
The Gateway of Torana is a monumental archway in Bhubaneswar, the capital of the Indian state of Odisha, located on the western end of the Khandagiri-Udaygiri Hills. Built in the 11th century CE, the Gateway of Torana is the first monument of its kind to be built in India. It is a fine example of the Orissan architectural style, displaying the use of curved and decorated spires, cut stones, and intricate sculptures. History:
The Gateway of Torana is renowned for its exceptional beauty and grandeur. The structure stands nearly 18 feet high, is composed of sandstone, and is made up of a two-sided archway with four distinct parts. Additionally, there is an intricately carved four-headed lion sculpted at the peak of the arch. The sculptures of the archway include images of Durga, Ganesha, Kamadeva, Kartikeya and Gajalakshmi. The Gateway of Torana was first constructed in the 11th century CE by the Eastern Ganga dynasty of Odisha. It served as the main entrance to the inner temples of the complex, thus creating a transition space between the inner and outer worlds. The design of the archway is also thought to represent the four traditional yogis of India: Simha, Vratya, Kambu and Vyaghra.
