Birwadi Fort is an ancient fort located in the village of Birwadi, Mahad taluka, Raigad district, near Mahad towns in Maharashtra, India. The fort is also known as Vishramgad Fort, famous for its historical significance. This fort is said to have been built in the early 16th century by a Brahmin, Rama Kamalesh Bhangale, who was a great devotee of Lord Vishnu. Overview The fort is situated on a hilltop at a height of about 5000 feet above sea level. It offers breathtaking views of the surrounding valleys and forests. The fort is surrounded by dense forests which makes it a perfect retreat for trekkers and nature lovers. The fort is accessible by trekking and takes about an hour or two for the climb. Prominent Features The fort has two entrances, one in the east and other in the west. The eastern entrance is much larger compared to the western entrance and it has a small gate with four bastions. The walls of the fort have many bastions and chambers which were used as watchtowers and rest houses by the rulers. The fort has a temple dedicated to Lord Vishnu on the top. History The fort is believed to have been built by Raja Bhangale in the early 16th century. The fort was later under the control of the Maratha rulers who used it as a strategic military outpost. It was used by Shivaji's soldiers to keep watch over the Nandgiri fort. The fort was later acquired by the British during their annexation of the Maratha kingdom. Interesting Facts Birwadi Fort is considered to be one of the most impregnable forts in the entire western ghats region. It is said that the fort was so well designed that it was difficult to scale the walls without the aid of ladders or siege engines. The fort also has an interesting story associated with it. It is said that the Maharaja of Kolhapur had hidden his daughter in the fort to escape being captured by the Maratha forces.
