The Painted Chamber of Kali Devi Temple is a part of the holy temple complex in Chinsurah, West Bengal, India. It is a late 18th century structure and is an excellent example of Indian art and architecture. The chamber is called so because of the array of vibrant paintings which adorn its walls and ceiling. The temple is one of the oldest and most important temples in the region, and it is estimated to have been in existence since 1679 CE. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Painted Chamber is a two-storey structure with a mandapa or entrance hall at the front. It is lavishly decorated with paintings and sculptures, mostly representing various Hindu gods and goddesses. Some of the most prominent features of the Painted Chamber are its terracotta images, stone friezes, wooden paneling, and the grand metallic doors at the entrance of the chamber. The Painted Chamber of Kali Devi Temple is the oldest surviving painted chamber in West Bengal. It is also the only temple in the region to have its own clock tower constructed in the 19th century. The temple is also home to various beautifully adorned shrines and statues of Hindu gods, goddesses, and saints.
