Brief History:

Babulnath Masjid, located in Girgaon, South Mumbai India, is one of the oldest mosques in the country. The mosque as it stands today was built by Siddi Baba Mahmud sometime during the 17th century. Siddi Baba Mahmud was an Abyssinian soldier, who was part of the Mughal army and became a Vazir (minister) in the court of the Mughal emperor Aurangzeb. The graves of Siddi Baba Mahmud and his family can be found on the premises of the mosque. Babulnath Masjid is a Grade I heritage structure declared by the Mumbai municipality. The structure is an example of an Islamic architectural style in India. The mosque features two onion shaped domes, surrounded by two statues of “rampurva” elephants. Architecture:

The architecture of the Babulnath Masjid in Mumbai is unique due to its blend of Mughal, Indian, and Western styles. Its structure is made of sandstone, granite, and white marble, and it features domes, a hall of prayer, archways, a courtyard, and a central ornamental arch. The main entrance is a large horseshoe gate, called a Char Darwaza, which is flanked by four smaller gates. Inside, there are four octagonal pillars which hold up the dome and support the arches which separate the central part from the outer hall. The charbagh or courtyard provides seating for the devotees who come to pray, with the semi-circular water tank located to the right of the entrance. The mosque also has a balcony where devotees can pay their respects. This is why, it is considered one of the most beautiful mosque in the world.
