The Buddhist Caves (No. 1 to 51) are a series of ancient rock-cut monastic and pilgrimage sites scattered across Maharashtra, India. They are located along the western part of the Sahyadri Hills near the ancient port city of Karad and form the most extensive Buddhist monument in India. These cave temples are believed to have been carved from the 2nd century BC to the 6th century AD. History:
The Buddhist Caves (No. 1 to 51) consist of several caves that house shrines and sculptures dedicated to Buddhism. The main components of each of these cave temples are the stupa or Chaitya (prayer hall or shrine), the viharas or Viharas (homes of monks or meditation chambers) and the stambas (pillars). The detailed and intricate carvings depict various events from the life of the Buddha, fine carvings of stupas, and intricately carved pillars are seen in some of these caves. These Buddhist caves were also used for the Buddhist Pilgrimage route known as the Pandava Lena, which was the path travelled by pilgrims who were making their way to the Buddhist pilgrimage site of Ellora.
