Ancient Durga Temple In India: History,Facts, & Services
Overview:
The ancient Durga Temple is located in the Indian city of Varanasi in Uttar Pradesh. It is dedicated to the Hindu goddess Durga and has been a site of pilgrimage since the 18th century. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple is a two-storied structure that consists of two main chambers: the main chamber and the sanctum sanctorum. The main chamber is a large hall with a shrine in the centre. The shrine is set on a raised platform and has five niches which house an idol of the goddess Durga. Other idols of Hindu gods and goddesses such as Rama, Krishna, Saraswati and Lakshmi can also be seen in the shrine. The sanctum sanctorum is the innermost chamber, where a life-size idol of Durga is worshipped. The temple also has a Vishnu temple and a Shiva temple in its premises.
