The ancient brick stupa on Elephanta Island, also known as Gharapuri Island, is an ancient structure situated 9 km away from the Mumbai harbour in the Arabian Sea. It is believed to be one of the earliest brick structures in India. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The ancient brick stupa at Elephanta Island is a square-shaped domed structure and is made of irregular masonry. The stupa is 15.2 m in circumference and 5.6 m in height. On the outer walls, there are stone columns that are believed to depict images from the Jataka Tales. There are also several auspicious symbols like the swastika and trident engraved on the walls.
