Overview:
The Memorial is situated in the heart of Shillong, close to the Mawkhar Police Station, and is surrounded by lush green vegetation. It is built on a circular plan and comprises a gallery, a sculpted chamber, a reflecting pool, exhibition spaces, memorial wells and a pavilion. The memorial offers a tribute to the memory of the those who gave their lives and paid an invaluable sacrifice for India's freedom struggle. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The Memorial comprises multiple features, such as: • A high podium with individual sculptures representing the four main regions of Manipur. • A large hall of black basalt stone, which has been beautifully sculpted. • A reflecting pool, which symbolizes the spirit of the Manipuri people. • A gallery that features the names of martyrs and other details regarding the freedom struggle. • Memorial wells, to represent the centuries-long valour of the Manipuri people in defending the freedom of India. • A pavilion, where various activities linked to Manipuri culture are organised.
