26 Siva Temples Overview The 26 Siva temples are a cluster of ancient shrines and monuments located in the Indian state of Tamil Nadu. These temples are believed to have been built between the 7th and 11th centuries and reflect the south Indian style of temple architecture. The 26 Siva temples are located in the district of Thanjavur, and are said to have been built by different dynasties, with the most prominent ones being the Cholas, the Pandyas and the Vijayanagara kings. 26 Siva Temples Prominent Features The temples are dedicated to Lord Shiva and are of great architectural value. The most prominent feature of the 26 Siva temples is the dravidian style architecture which is characterized by its emphasize on symmetric designs and proportions. Also, each temple has a Vimana (tower) and a Kalasam (tamil for 'bouquet of bells'). All these temples are crowned with a dome-like structure known as the Shikara, which features intricate sculptural work. 26 Siva Temples History The 26 Siva temples were commissioned by different rulers during different periods of history. The Cholas, who were at the helm of the Thanjavur region from the 9th century, built the most famous temple, the Brihadeshwara Shiva Temple. Other temples are believed to have been built by the Pallavas, the Pandyas, Jatavarman Sundara Pandyan and Vara Vijayanagar of the Vijayanagara Dynasty. Each temple is built around a central Shivalingam and is dedicated to Lord Shiva. 26 Siva Temples Interesting facts The 26 Siva temples represent the ancient style of south Indian temple architecture and are a testimony to the glorious past of the region. Apart from being a religious centre, the 26 Siva temples have also been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. The most famous temple in the complex, the Brihadeshwara Temple, has been listed as one of the ‘Great Living Chola Temples’.
