Overview:
emple (Agatisvara Temple), Varappur is an ancient temple dedicated to the Hindu god Siva. The temple is situated near the banks of the River Tungabhadra in Varappur, Tumkur District, Karnataka. It is believed that the temple was built during the Kadamba period (4th century AD to 16th century AD). This temple has great architectural value and it is one of the oldest temples in Karnataka. This national monument of India portrays the history and culture of the country.
History:
The temple is well-known for its intricate carvings, sculptures, and decorative archways. It has a huge hall which has a striking stone sculpture of Ardhanarishvara. The sculptures and decorations in the temple are attributed to the 12th century Hoysala style of art. The temple also has a mandapa or pillared hall, an open mantapa, and an entrance gopura or tower. The temple has a long history dating back to the pre-Chalukyan period. It is believed that it was built by local rulers and then expanded by the Kadamba rulers of Banavasi.
