Jaani kirik In Estonia is a Lutheran church located in Tartu, Estonia. The church is named after the patron saint of the city, Saint John. It is the largest church in Estonia and one of the oldest churches in the region, having been first mentioned in 1220. It is one of the best churches in Estonia which you must visit.

History:

The present building was completed in 1632 and is the result of two renovations done in 1549 and 1849. During renovations in the 18th century, the top of the tower was changed from a spire to a cupola; this is why the church is often referred to as the Jaani-Tuppa-Kirik or Jaani-Cupola-Kirik. During the Tsarist era (1721-1917), the Russian military used the church as a garrison, a practice that continues today as the Estonian Defence Forces use the Jaani kirik for training purposes. This is why, it is considered one of the oldest churches in Estonia.

The Jaani kirik is the largest and oldest church in Estonia. It has more than 800 seats and its interiors, with its tall pillars, are decorated with art from Estonia and Russia. The interior is also adorned with 21 wooden sculptures depicting legendary and biblical figures. The famous Estonian composer and organist, Arvo Pärt, studied here in the 1960s. The church also houses two smaller chapels and two towers, one of which is the oldest preserved chapel in Estonia.
