History:

The Parque Nacional Sierra Martín García in Santo Domingo, located in the northeaster portion of the Dominican Republic is a federally protected wildlife sanctuary. Covering 599 hectares it protects an array of endemic and endangered species. The park was established in 1967 to protect the Sierra de Neiba mountain range. The initial efforts to protect the area date back to the 1920s, when Dominican President Horacio Vásquez (governed between 1930-1931) declared the area a forest reserve. This decision was done to help protect the water resources that are fundamental to the sustainability of the region. Surveys of the area during this period concluded that many of the species found there were endemic to the Dominican Republic, and thus at risk of extinction. Due to the Neiba mountain’s high elevation, the area has been used since the 1940´s for tourism use. This, together with human encroachment during the 1950´s and 60´s, threatened the fragile ecosystem of the area and led to the need for its protection. In 1967, the Dominical Government approved the decree making Parque Nacional Sierra Martín García a protected area, with the objective of preserving the unique and fragile ecosystems of the Sierra de Neiba. In 2003, the National System of Protected Areas of the Dominican Republic (SINAP) designated the Parque Nacional Sierra Martín García as a Biosphere Reserve, given its wide biodiversity and importance for the conservation of the unique species found there. The area is also part of the Gateways to Neiba national network of protected areas. The park’s importance goes beyond just conservation, and is used by local communities to support traditional activities such as agriculture and hunting. Aside from these activities, the park also provides ecotourism opportunities for national and international visitors, such as hiking and bird watching. Visitors can also enjoy the breathtaking views of the surrounding mountains and landscapes. Thus, Parque Nacional Sierra Martín García plays an important role in the conservation, tourism, and local community development of the region.
