History:

Parque Central in Higüey is a park located in the center of the city of Higüey, La Altagracia Province in the Dominican Republic. Construction on the park began in 1932 as part of a plan to create a public square for the people of Higüey. The project was overseen by the military dictator Rafael Trujillo, who was also from the city. The park was designed by engineer and planner Morell Campos as part of a comprehensive plan for the urban renewal of Higüey, and was the main humanitarian project funded by the Regime of Trujillo in the 1930s. The project included the construction of an administrative complex, a hospital, housing, schools and the park, which included a Praxis fountain at the center. The fountain was donated by the United Fruit Company to the city on the occasion of its 25th anniversary. By the 1950s, Parque Central had become the meeting place for the people of Higüey for conversation, song, and celebration. During the time of the Trujillo regime, the park was the scene of various acts of public humiliation of political opponents. Offenders were taken to the park and publicly shamed. In 1995, the park was declared a National Historic Monument by the government and is now a major tourist attraction in the Dominican Republic. It is home to cultural and artistic events throughout the year, and is surrounded by numerous commercial establishments, hotels and restaurants, making it a popular visit for tourists and locals alike. The park is also home to a number of monuments and statues, including a statute of Trujillo and one of the Virgin of La Altagracia. It also marks the spot where Trujillo was assassinated in 1961.
