History:
Central Romana Corporation is a leading industrial, agricultural and tourism organization in the Dominican Republic, founded in 1906. In 1906, Italian entrepreneur Ettore Contini founded Inmobiliaria E. Contini S.A., which became Central Romana Corporation. The company began as a sugar cane processing business before expanding to include tourism, agricultural, real estate, and industrial investments. In 1950, Central Romana purchased the La Romana Sugar Mill and established the La Romana International Airport. In 1962, electric producer Cemento Romana was established, and is today the largest producer of cement in the Dominican Republic. In the late 1970s, the company extended its industrial operations to include oil refining and petrochemical industries. In 1979, Central Romana acquired the Dominica-American Sugar Company (DASCO) and the Haitian American Sugar Company (HASCO). Today, Central Romana is the largest sugar producer and energy producer in the Dominican Republic. It is also one of the largest employers in the Dominican Republic, providing jobs to approximately 15,000 people.
