Plaza de la Bandera (Flag Square) in Santo Domingo is an important historical monument in the Dominican Republic. It is rectangular in shape and is located in the historic center of the city. The plaza is bordered by Calle El Conde to the west, Calle Sanchez to the east, Calle Las Damas to the north and Calle Isabel la Catolica to the south. Originally known as the Plaza de Importaciones and then Plaza de las Armas, the plaza was rededicated in 1908 and took on its present name. It was here, on April 22, 1861, where national independence from Spain was declared. President of Santo Domingo, Pedro Santana, established a ceremony before a flag bearing the colors blue and red that represented the nation’s colors. This flag was crafted by women from the city. Barricades were erected in the plaza as a guard against Spanish forces during the campaign for independence. In 1861, the Spanish forces were defeated after the actions taken in this important plaza located in front of the National Palace. To commemorate this great event, a bronze sculptured fountain was erected and inaugurated by President Ramon Caceres in August of 1889. It stands today and reminds us of the Dominican people’s struggle for independence.
