History:

Las Galeras is a small fishing village located on the northeastern tip of the Dominican Republic, in the province of Samaná. It is one of the oldest settlements in the area, having been established in the late 18th century by Spanish settlers. The town was founded in 1790 by Marquis of Galeras. He was also the Governor General of the Dominican Republic from 1786 to 1799. The town was also known as El Cacique, or “The Chief”. The town was officially named Las Galeras in 1867. The village was strategically located due to its proximity to major international trade routes. Las Galeras became a popular port of call for ships, including many trade vessels. The early settlers found employment in fishing, whaling and trading with the nearby Bahamian islands. As the century progressed, the town developed an economy based on tourism, commercial fishing, agriculture and the trading of local goods.
