History:
The Estadio Quisqueya Juan Marichal in Santo Domingo was built and opened in 1975 and was primarily used for baseball. It was built from funds donated by the Chinese government. It is named after the famous Dominican baseball player, Juan Marichal. The stadium was originally intended for use by the professional baseball team Tigres del Licey and the home of the Dominican Winter League. It has a capacity of 16,000 and can also be used for concerts and other events. The stadium hosted the Caribbean World Series in 1977 and 1979 and has also hosted famous international personalities, including Pope John Paul II in 1984, who requested to be blessed in the stadium. In 2004, the stadium was renovated to conform to the requirements of the World Baseball Classic and Major League Baseball clubs. This renovation included the installation of new lighting, turf, and an electronic scoreboard. The stadium is currently home to the Tigres del Licey and the Leones del Escogido, two of the most successful teams in the Dominican Winter League.
