History:

Parque Nacional Sierra de Bahoruco is a national park located in the southwestern region of the Dominican Republic. It was established in 1974 and covers an area of 133sq km. It is home to a variety of flora and fauna, making it a popular destination for ecotourism and adventure seekers. The park is part of the Bahoruco Mountain Range, the largest in the Dominican Republic. It was declared a Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO in 1974. The area's rich biodiversity includes an incredible variety of ecosystems, ranging from lowland tropical forest to high-altitude cloud forests. These habitats harbor a wide variety of bird species, including the endangered Antillean Solitaire. The park is also home to many endangered animal species, including the vulnerable solenodon and the critically endangered Renjifo’s Hutia. Other species within the park include the bush dog, cougar, jaguarundi, and miconia. The park's eco-systems are a valuable source of water for the nearby communities and provide important resources for subsistence agriculture by the surrounding human population. Despite this, the park is threatened by illegal timber extraction, charcoal production, and overgrazing.
