History:

Parque Nacional Jaragua is located primarily in the Dominican-Republic, but it also includes areas in Haiti. The park was established by the Dominican government in 1975, covering an area of 1407 km2. It is the largest Coastal Protected Area in the Caribbean region and is part of the Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo Biosphere Reserve, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2001. The park is located on the western tip of the Dominican island of Hispaniola, in the Bahoruco and Pedernales provinces. It is part of the larger Jaragua-Bahoruco-Enriquillo Biosphere Reserve. The park's terrain is largely composed of semi-arid plains with some mountainous areas. It is especially known for its variety of flora and fauna, with over 700 species of plants and over 200 species of animals. The park was first proposed as an ecological reserve for scientific research and conservation purposes in 1975.
