History:

The Hotel Inglaterra in Havana, Cuba is one of the oldest luxury hotel in the city, having opened its doors in 1875. Located on Central Park (today Parque Central), this neoclassical hotel was built by a Spanish entrepreneur, Antonio M. de Trenor, who intended to create a high-end lodging facility. The hotel was described as having “the perfect location” by the Time-Life Travel Guides in 1964, which was evidenced by the many celebrities who stayed there. From 1940 until the Cuban Revolution in 1959, this was the main meeting place for the Havana elite and the most important dignitaries in Cuba and from around the world. In 1946, a fire broke out in the hotel and it had to be closed for repairs. During the next two decades, the renovations were completed and the hotel underwent some changes. In the early 1960s, the name of the hotel was changed to ‘Hotel Inglaterra Milanés’, to reflect the Cuban-Spanish connections. In the mid-1960s, the Cuban government intervened and the hotel was nationalised. Since then, it has largely remained in its original neoclassical style, and continues to be a popular hotel serving international tourists and locals. Today, Hotel Inglaterra offers 86 rooms and is renowned for its warm, elegant atmosphere.
