History:
Playa Jibacoa is a beach resort located on the northeast coast of Havana, Cuba. The area is known for its beautiful beaches and crystal-clear water. The area has a long history of human habitation, with evidence of native cultures from as early as 5,000 years ago. The Spanish first settled the area in the 1500s and it was quickly utilized as a supply port and trading hub. During the 19th century, the area rapidly grew into a popular resort destination. During this period, several beach clubs and hotels were constructed, including the Hotel Jibacoa. In the early 20th century, it became known as a luxurious and exclusive destination geared towards wealthy American tourists. Following the Cuban Revolution in 1959, tourism to Playa Jibacoa and the rest of Cuba was cut off. The Cuban government took control of the beach resort and most of the private property. Hotels, restaurants, and other businesses were either nationalized or forced to close. The beach resort was never home to major tourist attractions like nearby Varadero, and suffered little damage during this period. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, restrictions on travel to Cuba were slowly eased, and Western tourists once again began to visit Playa Jibacoa. In 2005, the Cuban government began to encourage tourism by renovating the beach resorts and promoting it as a destination. The area now offers a wide range of activities, including scuba and snorkeling, windsurfing, beach volleyball, and other beach activities. Today, Playa Jibacoa is one of the premiere beach resorts in Cuba. The area is a popular destination for tourists looking for a relaxed atmosphere and a beautiful beach destination.
