History:

Punta Gorda, located in the province of Cienfuegos, is one of the oldest cities in Cuba. It was founded in 1813 by an early settler, Antonio Perez. The city’s proximity to the Taguanes River gave it an economic advantage, and it quickly grew to become an important port. Shipbuilding, fishing, sugar and tobacco were the main industries. By the end of the 19th century, Punta Gorda had become a center of agricultural production, particularly with the introduction of coffee and coconuts. The booming export industry brought many immigrants from other Caribbean islands and Europe. In 1903 a lighthouse was constructed on the Isle of Youth, and the port of Punta Gorda became one of Cuba’s most important commercial and fishing ports. In the early 1940s, it was the country’s largest port, overtaking Havana in importance. During the 1950s, the influence of dictator Fidel Castro and the Communist government had a negative impact on the city’s economy. Many of the foreign investors left the country, and Punta Gorda’s economy suffered. Today Punta Gorda continues to be an important port and fishing center in Cuba, but with the introduction of tourism, it is becoming an increasingly popular destination. The city’s beaches, colonial architecture, and vibrant culture make it a great place to visit for both immigrants and tourists alike.
