Cienfuegos Cathedral is a Roman Catholic cathedral in the city of Cienfuegos, Cuba. The cathedral was consecrated in 1865 and is listed in the Guinness World Records as the only church constructed entirely out of cast iron. The proposal to construct a church in Cienfuegos began in 1829, when the city was founded. Initially the plan was to build the church in the middle of the main square, Parque José Martí. Later it was decided to build the church near the “Coyula” mountains in the area which belongs to the main Bastion. Construction of the church began in 1841. In 1845, the cast iron structure was completed, and Monsignor Ramón Jáuregui, Bishop of Santiago de Cuba, presided over the consecration of the church in September 1865. The church is considered a historical and cultural landmark of Cienfuegos. The exterior of the cathedral reflects an fusion of neoclassical and neocriollo styles, with its curved white walls, green roof and spire, while the sarcophagus-style altars and its neo-Gothic windows give it a unique look. In recent decades, the cathedral has been the site of numerous important events in the religious lives of Cuban Catholics. On July 28, 1982, Pope John Paul II celebrated Mass in the cathedral, making it the second church in Cuba to welcome the pontiff.
