History:
Malecón de Cienfuegos began to take its shape in 1906, when City Hall members authorized the director of the Constructions Office to hire an engineer to design a long dock on the south side of the city's bay. The idea was to foster Cienfuegos' commercial development, and the construction aimed to attract fishing, port and other related activities. The works started that same year, and were completed two years later, although it had to face several difficulties during the process, such as the money invested in the embankments breaking the bank and the scarcity of material at the time. Finally, on May 20th 1908, Malecón de Cienfuegos was inaugurated. One year later, the electrification of the avenue was finished, becoming one of the most important points of the city during the following years and till this day, as it joined the main square, the teatro Tomás Terry, the famous “El Trigal” and the “Punta Gorda” district. In the 1940s the avenue was remodeled again, increasing the value of the city and of the neighboring sites. Today, the Malecón de Cienfuegos is still a huge and popular attraction for both local and tourists, with its many fishermen, outdoor exercising areas, cultural events and activities, as well as its architectural designs that remind us of its unique history.
