The Monumento a la Toma del Tren Blindado, "Monument to the Capture of the Armored Train," is a famous monument and National Monument of Cuba located in the city of Santa Clara in the central region of the island. It is dedicated to the Cuban Revolution and commemorates the events of 28 December 1958, when Cuban Revolutionary forces led by the Marxist revolutionary Che Guevara stopped an armored train carrying weapons for the Cuban dictatorship of Fulgencio Batista in Santa Clara. The capture of the train marked a major victory for the revolutionary forces and is considered a critical event in the battle for the independence of Cuba. The monument was created by Cuban sculptor José Delarra and unveiled on 28 December 1959, in a ceremony attended by some 200,000 people. It was declared a National Monument in 1980.
