The Church of St. Demetrius is a historic Russian Orthodox church located in Saint Petersburg, Russia. Built in 1710, it is one of the oldest churches in the city and is dedicated to Saint Demetrius of Thessaloniki. The Church of St. Demetrius was constructed by the order of Peter the Great and is a prime example of Russian Baroque architecture. History It is believed to be the first Russian Orthodox church in the city of Saint Petersburg. The church was built by Ivan Starov in 1710 by order of Tsar Peter the Great and was intended to commemorate the victory in the Battle of Poltava. The stone building was constructed in the style of Baroque and was altered several times throughout the 19th century. In 1902 the bell-tower was reconstructed under the guidance of Vasily Kvitkin. Facts • The Church of St. Demetrius is situated in the Nevsky Prospekt, one of Saint Petersburg's busiest streets. • The building features three tiers with five domes and a bell tower. • Inside, the church is divided into 3 naves and features frescoes, gilded iconostasis and various other works of art. • As a reminder of the victory in the Battle of Poltava, the church contains a copy of a musket used by Peter the Great during the battle. Services The Church of St. Demetrius offers Mass on Sundays and weekdays. The timings of services are posted on the church's website.
