Church of Our Lady of the Angels is a Roman Catholic parish in Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1881 and located in the Boyle Heights district of East Los Angeles, it is the oldest standing parish in the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, as well as the oldest parish in Los Angeles County. History In 1881, the Italian-born priest Father Christopher Blais arrived in Los Angeles with plans to found a Catholic parish. While seeking a site for his proposed church, Father Blais met and struck up a friendship with Daniel M. Snyder, a Protestant landowner who owned the site where the present-day Church of Our Lady of the Angels stands. Snyder offered the land to Father Blais for the establishment of a Catholic church, which the priest gratefully accepted. In 1887, Father Blais established the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, which was also dedicated as the Archdiocesan Shrine of St. Vincent de Paul. Father Blais, as well as the first Archbishop of Los Angeles, Thaddeus Amat, laid the cornerstone of the new church on June 18, 1887. The church's grand opening was held on October 17, 1888.
