History:

Los Quetzales National Park was established in 1994 as a protected area in the San Jose province of Costa Rica. The park was created to protect the unique high-elevation cloud forest habitat found within the Talamanca Mountain Range,which is part of a chain of volcanoes stretching from Panama to Nicaragua. The park was formerly known as the 'Palo Verde National Park' and was created to protect the habitat of the national bird of Costa Rica, the resplendent quetzal. The park also serves to protect a number of endangered species, such as Baird's tapir, jaguars, and ocelots. The park covers an area of over 1,000 hectares (2,500 acres) with a variety of habitats ranging from lowland forest to ultra-high elevation cloud forest. The highest peak in the park is Cerro de la Muerte (3,779m or 12,399ft) and is the fourth highest peak in the country. The park is an important watershed for the region and is home to numerous rivers, streams, and waterfalls. It is also home to a variety of wildlife, plants, and amphibians.
