History:
The Arenal Hanging Bridges began in 1996 when venture capitalists Peter & Ruth Shiley donated land to Costa Rica. The land was purchased to connect the two Arenal Volcano National Parks, the Arenal 1968 National Park and the Chato Volcano National Park. The Shiley’s hired Rafael Gallo, an architect from the National University of Costa Rica and his team to construct a series of trails, suspension bridges and lookouts in the area. Since the completion of the first bridge, the project has grown immensely. Today, the Arenal Hanging Bridges consists of 9 bridges, several miles of trails and several rest areas with observation decks and picnic tables scattered along the way. The longest bridge is over 911 feet in length, making it the longest hanging bridge in Central America. The bridges help to create a unique bridge between hikers, bird watchers, and nature. With 720 of the 840 species of birds in Costa Rica found in the area, as well as three endangered species of cats, many visitors come to the area to catch a glimpse of the wildlife. The Arenal Hanging Bridges are now considered a major flagship habitat for eco-tourism.
