History:

The Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is located in the Costa Rica's Puntarenas Province and spans an area of 10,500 hectares. It is one of the world's most well-known and most visited protected area in Central America. It was created in 1972 to protect the tropical humid montane cloud forest in the area. The area was initially settled in the 1950s by Quakers from the United States who were looking to escape the draft in the US. They arrived expecting to find an isolated paradise for farming and living with nature. Instead, they found a region that had already been heavily deforested. In order to help protect the remaining forest and wildlife they worked with the local government to set aside a portion of the land as a protected area, known then as the Ecological Reserve of Monteverde. This was the first private nature reserve in the country and is regarded as one of the most important conservation successes in Central America. The reserve quickly became popular and began to attract Greater numbers of visitors, which supported the local community through ecotourism. Today, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve hosts around 150,000 visitors per year which contributes to the local economy. Although many people come to view the collections of flora, fauna, and other wildlife, the reserve also provides hiking, horse riding, camping, educational tours, and bird watching opportunities. In addition to the primary reserve, there are three other reserves that are connected to the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve through corridors, which allows for the movement of flora and fauna between the four reserves. These additional reserves, Santa Elena Cloud Forest Reserve, San Gerado de Dota Cloud Forest Reserve, and Piro Arenal Volcano Cloud Forest are all part of the same forest system. Today, the Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve is managed and protected by the local communities and is a living example of how conservation and sustainable development can co-exist.
