History:

Chirripo National Park has a long history of conservation and human in Costa Rica. The park spans 8,890 hectares of tropical rainforest, cloud forest, and high-altitude grasslands. It is located in the Talamanca Cordillera in the central highlands of Costa Rica and is the highest mountain in the country. The park was first established in 1975, with the proclamation of the area as a wildlife refuge by then-President of Costa Rica, Jose Joaquin Trejos Fernández. The proclamation included three of the five peaks of Chirripo Massif, making up what is now the core of the park. The initial park boundaries protected a small part of the watershed fed by the Chirripo River. Since then, the park has expanded to encompass the five peaks of the Chirripo Massif, providing a protected area for a unique mix of species, many of which are endemic to the area. The surrounding watershed consists of major rivers, small tributaries, lagoons, and ephemeral streams, all of which provide habitat for a wide variety of animals, plants, and fungi.
