History:

Rincon de la Vieja, also known as "Old Woman's Corner" is an active stratovolcano located in Costa Rica’s northwest province, Guanacaste. This 1,916-meter (6,286 feet) tall complex volcano is one of the most active volcanoes in the region and still continues to dominate the surrounding landscape with its numerous vents, including Las Pailas, Von Seebach, and Santa Maria. It is part of the Guanacaste Volcanic Range and is part of the large area of volcanic activity across Costa Rica. The volcano has been forming since the Pliocene age, approximately 5 million years ago. There are a number of stories about how the volcano got its name, but the one most widely accepted has it that a witch lived inside the volcano and that she provided locals with medicinal herbs to cure their ailments. It is also believed that the witch could be heard cackling and shaking her stone mortar and pestle as she lived among the many springs and waterfalls. Numerous eruptions have occurred over the past several thousand years at the Rincon de la Vieja since then, including large explosive eruptions in 1835, 1943, and 1968. The last eruption occurred in 1995 and caused ash fall in the region.
