History:

La Paz Waterfall Gardens is a private nature preserve and protected animal sanctuary located in Alajuela, Costa Rica. The gardens began as a small private estate owned by Byron and Celeste Quesada in the mid-1970s. The pair decided to create a place where people could come to experience the beauty and biodiversity of Costa Rica. In 1985 they began developing the gardens and adding waterfalls, trails, and wildlife viewing areas. They eventually purchased additional adjoining properties which allowed them to expand the gardens to over 250 acres and make it the largest private ecotourism and conservation site in Central America. In 1991 La Paz Waterfall Gardens became a non-profit organization and was dedicated to the conservation of the local environment as well as the promotion of sustainable ecotourism. The gardens offer trails and guided tours through their unique ecosystems. Visitors can see waterfalls, rainforests, wildlife, and a variety of animals including golden toads, scarlet macaws, white-faced capuchin monkeys, and jaguars. In addition to offering tours and educational programs, La Paz Waterfall Gardens has actively supported and participated in local and regional conservation efforts. They provide habitat to over 100 species of endangered and threatened animals, and the gardens are registered as a Key Biosphere Reserve under the UNESCO Biosphere Reserves program.
